Finding through the Spirit
We`re currently celebrating Pentecost, and we should ask ourselveswhat it means to us personally. And in this context we could ask ourselveswhat Pentacost has to do with our missionary calling. I have a skeptical friend who wanted to get baptized on Pentacost, but then decided that the missionaries were more interested in winning a number than in the personal relevance of Pentacost. I know it is not so: in the missionary manual "Preach My Gospel" we learn to not only teach by the Spirit, but to also find by the Spirit (pg 156, http://www.lds.org/languages/additionalmanuals/preachgospel)
Pentacost, the day when the Holy Ghost came to Earth as Christ had promised, is put in a new light by these ideas. Pentacost is also a feast of harvest in the Jewish tradition, as it marks the end of wheat havesting which begins with Pessach. This background lend a new meaning to Doctrine and Covenants section 4 (http://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/4?lang=eng), in which prophets father Joseph Smith sen. asks the Pentacost question of what he should do. Heavenly Father answers him, "For behold, the field is white already to harvest. ..." One of Sister Teusch´s favorite scriptures showes us the missionaries real motivation: "Behold, this is my work and my glory: to bring to pass the immortality and etarnal life of man." (Mose 1:39; http://www.lds.org/scriptures/pgp/moses/1?lang=eng)
In missionary terms, this is also the meaning of the Holy Ghost and this holiday whith which we honor Him. Through the atonement of Christ eternal life is possible for everyone. And the Holy Ghost guides us through our mortal lifes back to Heavenly Father. If our friend wants to secure this help, he should take the opportunity to be baptized as soon as possible.
I´ll share two events in the past week that illustrate what I mean.
Last Tuesday, Georg Palmueller from the genealogy club "Roland zu Dortmund" gave an enthusiastic report on the new Church website FamilySearch (http://www.lds.org/topics/family-history?lang=eng), and a day later Eva Holtkamp, the secretary of that club, gave me the link of a family history project Fuerstenberg School Muenster did in a class (http://www.history-award.de/alle-teilnehmer-2013/projekt-2-fuerstenbergschule-muenster.html). In this projekt a student found her father again whom she lost when she was born. When we think about our relationship to our Heavenly Father, we´re all really in the same boat. The restored gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ exells all efforts and uses all of today´s diverse resources to help everyone find the way back to HIM. But at least it may not function if not the Holy Ghost will inspire the situation in which many people would see a casual event.
